Phlegm and sputum that is coughed up is a combination of mucus from the lower respiratory passages, plus saliva in the mouth. In the diseases state, it may also contain pus, blood and even small amounts of tissue fluid. The same applies for the secretions from the nose. It may not look like mucus but most of the secretions are mucus mixed with these other components. It is difficult to isolate a cause with such limited information. You need to speak to a doctor who can examine the secretions, possibly even send it in for laboratory testing and evaluate the other signs and symptoms and make a diagnosis.
