    The sternum (breastbone) lies in the center of the chest. Pain on the sides could be related to inflammation of the costal cartilages and this condition is known as costochondritis. It is also possible that this is a problem with the chest wall muscles, ribs and so on. It may, however, also be related to internal structures like the lungs, lining around it, heart or the heart lining, great blood vessels, heart valves or even referred from the abdominal cavity or back.
