There are a couple of possibilities like acid reflux with esophagitis and/or pharyngitis and so on. What needs to be excluded here are conditions like chronic suppurative tonsillitis. This condition is frequently associated with acid reflux and the acid erodes the tonsillar tissue. The dead cells do cause a foul taste and the swelling of the inflamed tissue will create discomfort. This is just one possibility and depends on factors like whether the obstruction is felt close to the mouth or lower down the neck, is there any visible swelling on the outside, difficulty swallowing, cough or mucus production and so on. You should see an ENT specialist (otolaryngologist) who can examine the area further and make a diagnosis. If the pathology is further own, a bronchoscope examination may be necessary.
