In the Western India, investigators have exposed the illegal recycling of disposable surgical instruments, after the deadliest outbreak of hepatitis in the country, official reported.
Health ministry of Gujarat, two weeks ago, launched the campaign to find out the cause of the hepatitis outburst that had engulfed 56 people and sickened more than 100 people. Primarily research founded the infected syringes as the key culprit, health officials reported.
In the district Modasa, the hub of the eruption, officials raided the private dispensaries, hospitals and labs. They founded the extensive use of illegally recycled medical equipment that indicated the successful running black market.
Health official team also founded the 300 tons of medical waste products which were being repacked for the sale in open market.
“Authorities, in Ahmadabad, discovered the warehouses where these waste products such as needles, saline bottles, IV drip sets and syringes had been stored for the repacking.” Dr. Manish Fenci, a senior city health official said.
More than 20 general practitioners have been arrested for the illegal sale and purchase of the equipment, health minister stated.
Hepatitis B may damage liver and cause liver cancer. It spreads via contaminated needles and infected blood and semen. Vaccination had been invented to prevent this type of hepatitis.
Though, the problem is already well known in the country. A survey has reported that more than 30 percent of the surgical instruments used in the India were reused but this time the striking number quivered the department.
Reasons might include the ignorance, lack of legislation and quacks scattered in the whole country. But greed is also a giant contributing factor.
