Both- young and old women have proven to be less active than men, according to two separate studies, presented earlier this month.

One of these studies, analyze the level of physical activity and in relation to the play and social behavior among 52 boys and 82 girls, ages 10 to 11 years old. Lead researcher, Dr. Nicola Ridgers, found that boys were 8.7 percent more active and participate in vigorous games than girls during playtime.

“Girls used to spend more time in smaller groups (two to four children) and played verbal games, conversation and socializing, clearly describing, why they are less active,” she explained.

On the contrary, boys make large groups (10 children or more) and engage themselves to physically active games like soccer.

According to the available data, males tend to be more physically active in their later age as well.

Dr. Ken Fox of University of Bristol (UK) stated that, “people over 70, have very low physical activity as per our observation. More than seventy percent of the people involved in the research take fewer than 5,000 steps a day, for example, and women are more likely to be less active than men.”

“Social and environmental changes are leading us to physical inactive life with adverse health affect, such as heart problems, type 2 diabetes and mental health problems for people of all ages.”

If you are obese or overweight, don’t worry! You are in the group of that 66 percent Americans, who are suffering from this problem. But you should understand that, with a healthy weight you can maintain your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol level, which are the major risk factors for diabetes and heart problems, if not in the optimum range.

Researches have been founded that, some weight loss pills have also the potential to reduce weight but their effects are minimum without the physical activity.

For the effective weight loss, moderation in eating habit is the most essential factor. There is a simple rule that, to maintain weight, the calories you eat must be equal to the energy you burn in each day.

If you are overweight then you have to increase the utilization of energy than you take from food. To make a weight control plan you have to motivate yourself while altering you diet plan. The following tips are quite effective in the weight loss program:

Choosing low-fat or low-calorie foods

First you have to relay on the simple low-calorie diet than the high-calories diet. Add fruits and vegetables to your diet instead of red meat. Fish can be the best alternative to the other meats as it also contain omega-3 which reduce the saturated fats of the body. Drink plenty of water instead of beverages as it is the natural appetite suppressor.

Eating smaller portions

Do not skip the meal; it will force you to eat more, at one time, than you eat normally. You can add small portions to maintain your energy level instead of two or three big meals.

Being physically active

Physical activity is the pivot of the any kind of weight loss program. Without exercise, best weight loss pills will not provide the desired results. The best thing about physical exertion is, it accelerate the metabolic rate and enhance the energy utilization. But, steadiness is the only key factor which can provide the success in your weight loss program.

The study is expected to be presented at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting on cancer prevention research, in Washington D.C. on Monday.

The study also found that unhappiness was another factor that might boost risk for cancer in old age.

Senior research scientist, Igor Akushevich says in a news release: “ Almost 80% of all cancers are diagnosed in the elderly, and around 80% of known risk factors can be prevented with little bit efforts.”

Clinicians (if understand the risk factors of cancer) can recommend their older patients how to reduce their chances of developing future cancers.

The Duke group used information from a broad sample of the entire U.S. elderly population and found lifestyle, behavioral and demographic variables as notable contributors in the risk of breast, colon, lung and prostate cancers in seniors.

“As we were expecting, we could observe link between smoking and lung cancer. Exercises and other moderate physical activities can decrease your not only cancer risk but also keep you away from many other diseases,” said Igor Akushevich.

The rates of obesity are increasing among all the individuals, however disparity in its rate is related to the ethnic and the socio economic background; it is linked not only to the nutrition and the physical activities, but also to the environmental situation in which people live.

A new study appearing in the journal “Nutrition Reviews” says that the neighborhood and its socio-economic level, environmental factors like access to healthy foods and activities have played an important role in bringing the obesity problem to the alarming stage today.

The research was conducted by Jennifer L. Black of ‘New York University’s ‘Department of Nutrition, Food Studies and Public Health’ with her team who critically reviewed the studies done between 1997 a 2007 on neighborhood determinants of obesity.

They found that the disparity in the socio economic status also depicts its role in the obesity. Obesity was surprisingly found more prevalent among the people who had poor neighborhood and surroundings. The residents enjoy less space for the physical activity. Thus they have limited opportunities to engage in activities like cycling and daily walking.

This leads to a sedentary life style encouraging the rate of obesity. It suggests that several features of the neighborhood such as densities, poor street connectivity and the lack of sidewalks are associated with decreased physical activity and an increased risk of being overweight.

In addition, the access to the healthy and affordable foods is also limited as generally there is a lack of good departmental stores and supermarkets in such areas, so this works as another obstacle in building up a healthy life style. Small stores sell low quality, non-fresh food on higher prices, a situation that leads to poorer nutrition and lower health status.

During the study, a framework was decided to determine the different pathways through which neighborhoods and surroundings influence the body weight. The framework was designed to organize the different ways through which neighborhood determinants of obesity could be accessed.

It included the three important factors, like influence of social factors, provision of infrastructure promoting physical activity and healthy food to the residents and the individual life style influenced out of personal choices and preferences.

These three layers of study were also inter related so all the aspects had certain direct and indirect impacts on each other and ultimately impact weight.

They concluded that income, cultural preferences and hereditary tendencies contribute more to the geographic disparities. Change in the land use and better infrastructure change which promotes physical activity and access to better healthy food choices are emerging as important factors. This study attempts to provide a new area of public health intervention.
