What causes severe bloating high up under rib cage. Even a sip of coffee, bite of anything causes immediate bloating I and discomfort, pressure on heart, lungs, etc, Ifeel like sticking a large pin in to relieve gas pressure. No other pain or discomfort. I can go from a flat front to not seeing my feet in seconds, and takes hours to finally expel gas.

Such sudden bloating which also subsides so quickly can only be attributed to gas build up within the gut. The most common cause is aerophagia (swallowing air) but other less common causes are discussed in the article below. You should take note of eating too quickly, cigarette smoking, carbonated drinks, chewing gum and mouth breathing (possibly due to nasal congestion) all of which can significantly contribute to air swallowing.

Conditions such as IBS and a hiatal hernia are more likely to exacerbate the symptoms and lead to pain. You should see a gastroenterologist who can assess your condition further and run tests to exclude other conditions. Eating slowly, avoiding the causative factors mentioned above and mild activity after a meal may help ease some of the symptoms. Your doctor will be able to advise you further.
