I discovered a year and a half ago a lump on my left side just below my rib cage. My dr. diagnosed it as lipoma or fatty tumor. Had a ct scan done 1 year ago on my abdomen to make sure there was nothing going on and it came back fine. It has grown since then. Worrying that it may be cancer of some type? My dr. said I could go to a surgeon if it ever started bothering me and have it taken out. Should I be concerned?

It’s difficult to say whether you should be concerned solely on the information you have provided which may be lacking some vital facts about your case. The best way to approach this is to see the surgeon, discuss the options and consequences of not having it removed. This will give you a better idea of what you should do next. Any growth, whether benign or malignant, that is growing in size should be taken seriously and dealt with where possible. A lipoma is a benign growth but can grow to a point where it impinges on other organs and structures like nerves, etc leading to pain. A cancerous growth of the fat tissue is a liposarcoma and does not start from a lipoma. There is also the possibility that the growth you may be seeing now is not entirely due to the lipoma which is why it should be assessed again.
