A new breakthrough in the field of developing immediate treatment a casual wound should be adhered to, has been introduced recently.
It has come in the shape of a spray on dressing. It has been developed by the ‘Center for Military Biomaterials Research (CeMBR)’, part of the ‘New Jersey Center for Biomaterials’ at Rutgers University.
It can be seen as a major advancement in the field of treating a casualty and civilian wounds.
The sprayer comes with a dual syringe that releases two polymer ingredients. Due to an immediate reaction, the two polymers mix rapidly to form a gel based dressing that can be applied easily on the wounds. It has come up as an excellent option for the wounded soldiers. The dressing suits to the wound very easily, sticks to the healthy skin and not enhances the injury. It comes with the convenience of a household kit.
It can be applied on all minor cuts and scrapes, even in hard to reach areas such as between fingers and toes. It is 100% waterproof, sealing out water, dirt and germs to help prevent infection and provides healing faster as compared to the conventional plasters. It also provides instant pain relief and is appropriate for minor wounds, abrasions and skin cracks. They are also great for shaving cuts, hangnails, finger cracks and paper cuts. So it has a good potential in civilian health care too.
At present, it has been created for the military however it can be used by the civilian rescue teams while treating wounds and burns. The manufactures of the “GelSpray” would focus on including active ingredients which can help in treating the infection and pain and also control the bleeding. The spray can play an important role in treating diabetic ulcers, ostomies and post operation wounds.
The research center at present wants to develop innovating medical technologies for the injured soldiers and fulfill the needs of the casualty care. It took three and a half yeas to develop such a remarkable product.
Rutgers’ Center for Military Biomaterials Research is trying to collaborate with industry to conduct further research in the new product. It has proven to be an excellent link between academia, industry and the military to take care of the immediate needs of the military in the health care field. It not only strives to bring in light the unique needs of the casualty care but also plans to introduce new technologies for the injured soldiers.
The center is supported with funding from the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command for the research part of the product.
