The stiffness may be related to conditions like rheumatoid arthritis although age related changes and degeneration of the joints may be responsible as well. If this occurred overnight, then an infection should be suspected. Ideally the person should see a doctor as soon as possible, and a geriatric specialist (geriatrician) will help with the long term management of the condition.
