I am wondering if you may be able to help me. Ever since I was a very little girl I have had what is now known as Costochondritis (when I was little, my parents were told that it was caused by stress and lifting my heavy school backpack). For most of my life the pain has come and gone until about a year ago. Last August, the pain became so bad that my parents took me to the emergency room. Ever since the pain has not gone away and it is now moving down both sides of my rib cage and down my back.

I have seen many doctors and have even gone to a bone specialist but all anyone can tell me is that the cartilage around my rib cage is inflammed (probably since nothing else seems to be wrong), they do not know why or what to do except to treat the pain. I have had blood tests conducted, x-rays, an echocardiogram and a bone scan. All results have come back fine.

I am 23 years old and I was told today that I may suffer from this for the rest of my life and there is nothing anyone can do to help me except provide medicine. I want to know if this is true, what causes the inflammation and what if anything I can do to help it or make it go away. If you could help me I would really appreciate it. Thank you for your time and energy!
