GLOSSARY TERMS FOR SURGERY
Abdominal hysterectomy – By surgical incision the uterus is removed. It is done through abdomen.
Anesthesia : during surgery the medicine used to get rid of pain. Normally it is injected in to the body.
Surgical antibiotics : the antibiotics used before and after the surgery..
Anticoagulation drugs: drugs used to prevent blood clotting.
Appendectomy – inflamed appendix is removed through surgery.
Arthroscopy – surgical method of seeing the inner portion of a joint by endoscopy.
Biopsy: removal of tissue from the body for diagnostic purposes.
Catheter: a flexible tube to remove from or inject fluid into body.
Cholecystectomy : gallbladder removal by surgery.
Colectomy : removal of partial or complete portion of colon.
Craniotomy: opening of the skull by means of surgery.
Debridement : removal of foreign material, damaged tissue from a wound and it is done by surgery.
(D & C) : a surgery by which the cervical canal is widened with a dilator and scrapping the uterine with a curette.
Electrosurgery : using electric instruments in surgery.
Emergency surgery : an operation conducted immediately as soon as the patient is admitted to save a life under such emergency medical conditions.
Free skin graft : repairing the damaged area of the skin by removing healthy skin by means of surgery.
Gastrectomy : removal of partial or total removal of the stomach by surgery.
General anesthetic : the patient is made unconscious during surgery and it is achieved by injecting a medicine.
Hysterectomy : uterus removal by surgery.
Laparoscope : optical system attached endoscopy.
Local anesthesia : the site of the body operated by surgery is made to numbness by medication.
mastectomy : surgical removal of all or part of the breast.
nephrectomy : kidney removal by surgery.
outpatient surgery : simple surgery which makes the patient to go home on the same day itself.
Prostatectomy partial or complete removal of prostate by surgery.
Regional anesthetic : a portion of the body is made numb during surgery.
Splenectomy – surgical removal of the spleen.
total hysterectomy : the entire uterus is surgically removed, including the cervix; the fallopian tubes and the ovaries remain.
