When I eat I feel like the food is getting stuck between my throat and the upper part of my chest. What could be causing this feeling?
It depends whether the food is really getting stuck in this area or whether this is just a sensation (globus sensation) without any impairment of the passage of food. A globus sensation is a lump like feeling in the throat that is present even when not eating.
You will need to see a doctor who can investigate this. The causes may vary from inflamed tonsils, to sore throat, strictures or growths in the upper gut. Certain diseases of the nerves or muscles may also affect the motility of food through the gut. The various possible causes of dysphagia (medical term for difficulty swallowing) can arise in the upper part of the alimentary tract (oropharyngeal dysphagia) or further down in the esophagus (esophageal dysphagia).
