HIV infection often does not show any symptoms of the infection and it only method to diagnose is by testing a person’s blood. Two traditional tests are available to diagnose AIDS. First test looks for the level of antibodies generated by the body in reaction to HIV and the second test that looks for the viral load itself.

Now the researchers have developed the quicker methods to detect HIV which are little expansive than the traditional but save the time of people and minimize the risk of spreading such as home HIV test kit.

Antibodies are the proteins released within the body whenever a disease or micro organisms attacks it. When HIV infection occurs, body produce antibodies specific to HIV. The first test, commonly known as ELISA, detects such antibodies in blood.

If antibodies are found then the ELISA test gives a positive result. For the confirmation of the ELISA test the second part, Western Blot or IFA is performed. It is not essential that all positive tests of ELISA are accurate; hence Western Blot is very important to confirm a person’s HIV infection.

The antibodies released for HIV, usually are undetectable in the blood till the three months after infection. This period, from the moment of infection till the confirmation of positive result, is known as Window Period.

Some times, the antibodies take six to twelve months to appear. Even in case of negative results, during the Window Period, the viral load could be heavy in an HIV infected person. Therefore, if a person is just infected, the risk of transmission is higher. If a person is infected with HIV and still both tests are negative, a physician may suggest the repetition of the tests after every three months to let the antibodies reach at reasonable level.

In case of positive result, one can have early access to treatment. Early recognition of the AIDS can be very helpful in majority of the cases. Doctors can help HIV patients in building confidence and learn how to live a healthy and responsible life.

Circumcision is considered not only to save men from AIDS virus but also protect them from some common sexually-transmitted diseases. Two new studies that have been presented at the world AIDS conference suggest that circumcision offer greater protection to men than thought.

Robert Bailey, a US researcher from the University of Illinois, Chicago presented long-term data from a trial in Kenya and in its early phase 2,784 uncircumcised uninfected men were enrolled.

Half of the men in the group were circumcised first and the others circumcised afterward and then they were tested for HIV later.

The outcomes of the earlier-published research from this trial showed that after two years, there were 59 percent lesser chances for circumcised men to contract HIV than uncircumcised counterparts.

While presenting the report at the 17th International AIDS Conference, Bailey told that the estimate of protectiveness at 24 months was adjusted to nearly 60% considering refined lab tests from blood samples.

At the 42-month mark, he reported, circumcision gave almost 65 percent of protectiveness.

The extension of the study that has been conducted among 1,739 out of 2,784 volunteers will be completed until December 2009.

The other study presented by the South African researcher Dirk Taljaard in which a well-known circumcision trail, at Orange Farm, South Africa, was reported.

According to researchers from University of California, San Diego, neuropathic pain in HIV patients can be relieved by using medicinal marijuana.

In the study, the researchers included those 28 HIV patients whose nuropathic pain wasn’t relieved by opiates or other pain killers. The researchers noticed that the patients who smoked medicinal marijuana reported significant relief in their pain compared with those who were given a placebo.
The University of California Center for Medical Cannabis Research (CMCR) sponsored the study and it has been published online in Neuropsychopharmacology.

“In HIV patients, Neuropathy is a significant problem in HIV patients and there aren’t adequate treatments that offer pain relief to sufferers,” said lead researcher Dr. Ronald J. Ellis who is an associate professor of neurosciences. Ronald further added, “Our study found that smoked medicinal marijuana proved effective and well-tolerated when it was included to the patient’s current pain medication and it offered an increased pain relief.

The results of the study are consistent with other CMCR-sponsored research and support the effectiveness of medicinal marijuana to relieve neuropathic pain.

“Our study is another confirmation that shows cannabis proves quite helpful to manage neuropathic pain at least in the short-term” stated Doctor Igor Grant who is a professor of psychiatry and director of the CMCR.
