This study is one of the first group studies to analyze the effects of calcium and dairy food in relation to the cancer prevention. Researchers noted.

By reviewing data of previous studies, researchers analyzed the effects of calcium rich diet on the risk of cancer in 198,903 women and 293,907 men.

During the follow up period of seven year 16,605 women and 36,956 men developed cancer, researchers found.

Calcium intake was long been associated with the risk of cancer reduction, in women, but instead, no beneficial effect was seen with the consumption of 1300mg of calcium.

People who consume more calcium have low risk of digestive system cancer with respect to their peers who use less calcium, researchers noted.

“These findings show that current recommendation of calcium intake lowers the risk of cancers in women and especially colorectal cancer in both.” The researchers concluded

Canadian researchers have developed a new tool that will help evaluating the interaction of various proteins in cancer can help predicting the chances of patient survival. The study was lead by Dr. Jeff Wrana of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, published in Nature Biotechnology online this week.

This will be helpful to trigger the right treatment right from the time of evaluation. The researchers used the protein network of about 350 women in USA and Europe.

Protein network is an important chemical compound in cellular processes. It was found that the survivors had a different organization of protein network comparing to the dead ones.

In the research they successfully concluded the accurate predictions of 82 percent patients by tracking their protein network. Dr. Jeff Wrana said, “We approached cancer as a problem in how proteins communicate with each other — or how proteins interact with each other in networks.”

He further added, “It could help to direct the appropriate therapies for individual patients”. He and his team observed about 30, 000 protein interactions which involved about 8,000 proteins.

He also said, “We really want to take each persons tumour as an individual disease and apply individualized therapy to those patients and thereby get much better and more effective outcomes.”

It is said that the technology will be provided for clinical use within 5 years.

A mutant gene formerly found to help defend the lungs against toxins may also be connected to lung cancer and several hereditary cases of a life threatening lung disease affecting older adults, according to a new study.

Mutations in the SFTPA2 gene have been analyzed in people with the inherited adaptation of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, or IPF, a lung disease that affects 200,000 people, only in the U.S.

This disease mainly affects people age 50 and older than that and causes intense scarring of the lungs that cause about 40,000 deaths per year, according to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

One out of 50 patients of IPF has an inherited form of the condition and in such cases the treatment is none other than lung transplant. The results were revealed in the January issue of The American Journal of Human Genetics.

The SFTPA2 gene performs the function of producing surfactant protein A2 in the pulmonary fluid of the lungs, and it provide the protection of organ against invading pathogens.

In the study, researchers from University of Texas analyzed the people with the inherited type of the disease many of these people with the mutant gene had lung cancer as well as IPF. The researchers concluded that the gene mutations are tied to both or the conditions.

The researchers are presently working on molecular studies to discover the fact, why these gene mutations increase the risk for lung cancer or IPF?

The study, published in the l Journal of the American Medical Association. 17 Dec. issue, reveals that smokers have almost 18% higher risk of getting that cancer and 25% increased risk of death from the disease.

Edoardo Botteri, the lead author of the study, says: “There is a significant link between smoking and the occurrence of colorectal cancer and related deaths.”

“Smokers must keep in mind that it not only increases their risk of developing the cancers of the organs that have direct tobacco exposure including lungs, larynx and digestive tract of upper area, but it also increases the risk of developing cancers in those organs that don’t have a direct tobacco contact like kidney, bladder, pancreas, rectum and colon,” he added.

To find a link between smoking and colorectal cancer, the researchers examined the data received from 106 reviewed studies that had different number of participants ranging from few hundred to 1 million.

Looking at the collective risk, the researchers found that smokers had an 18% increase risk of developing colorectal cancer.

The study is expected to be presented at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting on cancer prevention research, in Washington D.C. on Monday.

The study also found that unhappiness was another factor that might boost risk for cancer in old age.

Senior research scientist, Igor Akushevich says in a news release: “ Almost 80% of all cancers are diagnosed in the elderly, and around 80% of known risk factors can be prevented with little bit efforts.”

Clinicians (if understand the risk factors of cancer) can recommend their older patients how to reduce their chances of developing future cancers.

The Duke group used information from a broad sample of the entire U.S. elderly population and found lifestyle, behavioral and demographic variables as notable contributors in the risk of breast, colon, lung and prostate cancers in seniors.

“As we were expecting, we could observe link between smoking and lung cancer. Exercises and other moderate physical activities can decrease your not only cancer risk but also keep you away from many other diseases,” said Igor Akushevich.

According to a new study, risk of developing breast cancer can be predicted by measuring high bone mineral density (BMD) regardless to how high risk is on frequently used Gail model.
To better predict the risk of breast cancer, the two measurements would be used together in tandem, the researchers stated.

It is expected that the findings will be published in the Sept.1 issue of the journal Cancer and it will follow the foot steps of those other researches related to different aspects of breast cancer risk with bone health.

In May, a study that was presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology showed that Zometa which was used to treat osteoporosis could decrease the risk of recurrence of breast cancer in premenopausal women.

Similarly, another study that has been recently released shows if the women with breast cancer have vitamin D deficiency at the time of diagnosis of the disease, their chances of recurrence of the disease and death are quite higher. Vitamin D is considered essential for healthy bones.
The researchers from the University of Arizona, Tucson, led the study and they incorporated hip BMD information and Gail scores of those 10,000 postmenopausal women who were taking part in the Women’s Health Initiative.
With an average nine years of follow-up, the chances of developing breast cancer were 35 percent higher in women with increased Gail score and there was a 25 percent high risk of developing breast cancer with the increase of each unit in total hip BMD.
Women with the highest BMD and Gail scores had a particularly high risk of developing cancer.

An earliest possible detection of the ‘pediatric papillary thyroid cancer’ is always beneficial for ensuring the improved treatment of the disease. In the prognosis of this disease, the age of the patient plays the most important role. A new research study published in the February issue of the journal “Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery” has established this finding.

Researchers in Italy made an evaluation of almost 2,709 patients who were undergoing a complete “thyroidectomy” treatment, targeting the ‘Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (PTC)’. It was observed that the pediatric patients who were below the age of 18 years, the rate of cancer progress was comparatively more aggressive compared to the adult patients.

Patient’s rate of survival does not get influenced by this aggressiveness .The main reason behind this result is better prognosis rate in younger patients compared to the adult patients. It helped the researchers to conclude that it is age of detecting the cancer which is the most important factor that leads to the consideration of issuing a prognosis.

Among the children the world over, thyroid is the third most common tumor malignancy. In previous years the rate of increase in the thyroid cancer cases has gone manifold. In just one year, from 2006 to 2007, the rate of increase was reported to be 11% almost.

Papillary thyroid cancer generally affects severely the cells producing the typical thyroid hormones that contain iodine. This type of thyroid cancer which is very common in children has a very slow rate of growth.

This research study is also confirming the fact that the PTC is more prevalent among the younger patients in comparison to any other age group of patients.

Size of the tumor also plays an important role in the determination of prognosis among the patients who are adults. The size however, does not play an important role in the prognosis among the children patients, say the researchers.

Researchers are of the view that a continued follow up for a longer period will facilitate the actual measurement of various parameters and this will further help in developing more successful treatments for thyroid cancer.

A new study was announced recently by the Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas in collaboration with the biotechnology leadership organization’Biocept’ for investigating the ability to isolate circulating tumor cells (CTC’s) in blood.

The study will use Biocept’s “Cell Enrichment and Extraction Technology,” designed to capture rare cells from a larger heterogeneous cell population. The focus of this study is ovarian cancer.

This innovative technique applied in rare cell capture offers will enhance the opportunity to detect circulating ovarian cancer cells. Dr. Anil sood, Principal Investigator of the study team said,” the goal is to provide more powerful tools to monitor the response to treatment improve early detection and personalize prognosis for our patients.”

This study shall be focusing around three major objectives. It aims to optimize detection and isolation of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in ovarian cancer patients. It will be an attempt to quantify the levels of CTCs in patients with primary or recurrent ovarian cancer, and to compare gene profiles between CTC’s and primary tumor specimens. The findings of this study could provide valuable insights for the treatment planning and identification of novel biologic targets.

“We hope that our ability to isolate and quantify circulating tumor
Cells will improve cancer detection and treatment by giving physicians
Valuable information early in the disease course,” remarked Gordon Janko, President and CEO of Biocept.

Ovarian cancer forms in tissues of the ovary, one of a pair of female reproductive glands in which the ova, or eggs, are formed. Most ovarian cancers are either ovarian epithelial carcinoma. It is a type of cancer begins in cells on the surface of the ovary. It could also be a malignant germ cell tumor, a cancer that begins in egg cells.

According to an estimate, in the year 2007 alone the number of such cases would increase up to 22,430. It is also estimated that more than 15,280 deaths would be caused by ovarian cancer in the United States.

There has been a continuous war against the deadly disease known as cancer from the time it first came into the picture. The medical science has conducted the research on the number of fronts that could prove to be beneficial as the remedy for this disease. The healthy diet has proved its essence in preventing as well as curing some severe diseases. Thus, it has been looked as the potential option for treating the cancer of any body part as well.

Prefer To Eat the Plant Foods

The plant foods are the main ingredients of the diet that is helpful in fighting cancer. There are number of fruits and vegetables that are rich in a number of desired nutrients that helps in building the strong immune system against the cancer. Along with the fruits and vegetables, the items like whole grains and beans are also the prescribed items of this diet.

Folate Rich Food Items

Apart from the diet prescribed above, one may also consider the food rich in foliate. The inclusion of about 400 micrograms folate rich food in the diet may reduce the chances of having cancer in any of the body part. The diet that is rich in folate includes orange juice, spinach, peas, beans and various types of sprouts. Apart from this, one must also consume the food rich in various kinds of phytochemicals like allyl sulfides and resveratrol. These chemicals are found in the items like onions, garlic, strawberries, walnuts, pecans, black or green tea, soybeans, grains and peanuts.

Planning the Three Meals of the Day

There should be a proper diet chart to be followed during the three meals of the day. The breakfast should consist of items like yogurt accompanied with mil and berries.

It could be followed by the consumption of apples along with the green tea. In the lunch, one may include the items like spinach, broccoli, cheese and pineapple. Also, the fresh tomato juice will enhance the nutritional value of the food that is planned to fight cancer. The dinner should be planned with the items like salmon, along with the touch of onion and garlic. The soup made from pumpkin and also the stewed potatoes are also advised. It could be followed by a session of black tea.

Don’t Forget the Vitamin D

The vitamin D is very significant in fighting the various types of cancers that include the breast cancer and the lung cancer. The survival rate of the people undergoing surgeries in the winter has been found to be considerably less as compared to that of the surgeries done in the summers. This is due to the fact that the sunlight exposure is more prominent in providing vitamin D in summers as compared to that in winters.

The healthy diet is the great assistance in the mission of fighting cancer. All is required is the right knowledge of items to be included in the diet and that could gain by the guidance of the health professional.
