On 12th of April Pampers continued its 50th birthday celebrations along with the celebrity parents who delivered the care packages to the NICU in the Newyork at Mount Sinai Hospital. Pampers kicks off Little Miracle Missions, as a part of Little Miracle Mission Programs, Pampers along with Graham’s foundation has planned to deliver care packages to families whose babies are in 3rd level Neonatal Intensive Care Units. The purpose of this donation is to care for the newborn and premature babies. In order to complete this mission, employees of pampers will meet to compile care packages and to deliver to local NICU of Good Samaritan Hospital.

Pampers also conducted a research to take an idea, how parenting have evolved in U.S.A since last 5 decades. Following are the result of this study; Increase in multiple births rates in U.S.A, Rise of the use of fertility treatment, Increase in number of single-parent families, Current birth rate of U.S.A is almost equal to that of 50 years back, Gestational Surrogacy has become a more feasible option, Rise in average age of first-time mom, Stay-at-home fathers has become common.

General Manager of Pampers Jodi Allen said, “In the midst of this very exciting milestone, Pampers 50th birthday, we are taking a retrospective look at five decades of parenthood filled with scientific advancements that have fundamentally changed the way we have we become parents. In embracing all of these changes and believing that all babies are little miracles to be celebrated we are so thrilled to unveil our Little Miracle Mission Campaign, which delivers acts of support to families and(hopeful families), while encouraging them to do the same”.

Little Miracle Mission Programs aims to safeguard, support and facilitate the kids. On 11th of April, employees with Vic Mills i.e. the founder of Pampers and inventor of Pampers diapers gathered with their kids to honor the progress of parenting and the role played by the Pampers at headquarters of P&G Baby Care. Pampers has also launched a TV ad to celebrate “Every baby as a little miracle”. The great thing about this campaign is its motive; Pampers is not promoting its brands on its 50th anniversary, it actually aims to encourage people to help others by presenting itself as an example.

Children who born prematurely, before three months or more, are more likely to develop autism, a new U.S. study reported.

With the measurement of standard screening tool researchers found that, such kids are two to three times more prone to exhibit autism signs than the normal kids at the age of two years.

Autism also referred as autism spectrum disorders (ASD); that is a group of developmental disorders, illustrated as impaired social interaction and communication, and by constrained and repetitive behavior. ASD have strong genetic basis but the exact cause is still unknown.

Dr. Karl Kuban said, the elevated risk of autism indicated in these children may not be directly associated with premature birth. In spite of it, cause of autism, whatever it is, may force pre-term birth.

The researchers analyzed the 988 American prematurely born kids, at least 90 days before their expected birth date.

Then they were checked for the 23 behaviors to confirm the signs of autism through screening method, at the age of two. Results express that most of the children may have autism but this tool is not able to precisely diagnose the condition. Normally signs and symptoms of autism don’t appear before the age three, lead researcher said.

Since developmental problems in premature babies are common unrelated to ASD that could be the reason of positive result. Researchers then dropped children with vision, motor and hearing dysfunction. Even then, sixteen percent kids show positive results for autism.

“Baby products” like shampoos, lotions and powders may render exposure to infants to certain chemicals which already have a proven association with reproductive problems, a small study gives alarming news. This has thrown a new insight into the indulgence the contemporary parents display while using these baby products.

“Phthalates”, a component commonly used in these products is a group of chemical compounds which are mainly used as plasticizers, substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility. These are profusely used in cosmetics, toys and medical supplies. They are also used to stabilize fragrances of these products.

The recent study found the levels of these chemicals prominent in the urine of babies who’d been recently shampooed, powdered or lotion with baby products.

Some of the environmental advocacy organisations have shown aggression to these chemicals ‘Phthalates’. However it is still not supported by any proven scientific evidence to clearly enlist the dangers which are associated with the usage of these products.
Few animal studies have clearly shown an association between phthalates and the reproductive birth defects, indicating a probable occurrence of reproductive problems in boys and early puberty in girls.

Rigorous scientific evidence in human studies is lacking. The current study offers no direct evidence that products the infants used contained phthalates, and no evidence that the chemicals in the babies’ urine caused any harm. Still, the results worried environmental groups that support restrictions on these chemicals.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana, a ‘University of Washington’ paediatrician, said, “The bottom line is that these chemicals likely do exist in products that we’re commonly using on our children and they potentially could cause health effects.” Sathyanarayana further added that babies don’t need any special lotions, powders and shampoos.

However the parents who still wish to go for such products are advised to seek products labelled “phthalate-free,” or check labels for common phthalates, including DEP and DEHP. Since the chemicals frequently used in fragrances are not enlisted on the labels that is where the fragrances, a common phthalate escape our notice.
Since the researchers of this study did not test the baby care products for the presence of phthalates, more research has been stressed upon to explore stronger associations with the developmental and reproductive outcomes.

Several phthalates have been found in urine from diapers as well as baby wipes. They also asked the mothers about use in the previous 24 hours of baby products including lotions, powders, diaper creams and baby wipes.

There is need of more medical evidences to strengthen these findings however it has already able to create an urge among the health organization to device new regulations for the cosmetic industry to produce safe products.

Delaying the baby feeding with solid food until six months after the birth, mothers around the world apply this as a cardinal principal and try to save their babies from possible risks of developing asthma and allergies. Research however, suggests that mothers are simply wasting their time ensuring that.

Dr Joachim Heinrich, at the ‘Institute of Epidemiology in Neuherberg, Germany’, and colleagues made an attempt to emphasize that even the international guidelines also advise that babies should not be given solid foods for up to 6 months after birth in order to reduce their risk of developing asthma and allergies. These research findings have been published in the January issue of the journal “Pediatrics”.

“Scientific evidence for this advice is scarce“, say the researchers. This new finding is based on the evidence of a study recently conducted that included analysis of data on 2,073 children who were monitored between a period of their birth and 6 years of age.
Parents of all these 2,073 children were asked to complete regular questionnaires on their children’s health and feeding habits. They were also asked to provide the information about the age at which they were given the solid food for the first time.

Researchers also conducted the blood tests and physical examination of all these children at the ages of 2 and 6 years with an objective to identify the chances of development of asthma and allergies.

Researchers, surprisingly, found no substantial evidence suggesting that delaying the introduction of solid foods for 4 to 6 months was in any way related with a reduced risk of asthma, hay fever, or sensitization against certain foods or even allergens in the air at the age of 6 years.

On the other hand, the researchers did observe some evidence that suggests about the delayed introduction of solid foods having a linkage with an increased risk of food allergies among the children.

This large population based study focusing on the asthma and allergic diseases could reveal no sustentative evidence for a “protective effect of a delayed introduction of solids past 4 or 6 months on asthma, allergic rhinitis, or food or inhalant sensitization against food or inhalant allergens at 6 years of age”, said Dr. Heinrich.

Researchers expressed that avoiding giving solid food to the babies for the initial four or six months or introducing the less diverse diet within a period of initial four months bears a significant statistical correlation and positive linkages with the food sensitization process in the babies. Researchers however, suggest being cautious when introducing such a diet to the babies.
