HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTIONS
A patient who contracts an infection while after 48 hours in hospital is said to have a hospital acquired infection. These infections can be caused by viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens. These are grouped into three categories :
- Response to medical or surgical treatment
- Organizational risk factors.
- Patient risk factors.
It is estimated that about one in ten patients contract HAIs. Many different types of infectious diseases may arise with a hospital acquired, the most common of which are urinary tract infections, lung, wound and blood infections.
