It is difficult to say without other information on your medical history, other symptoms and so on. You will also need to be examined by a doctor who will conduct a quick neurological examination to rule out any serious disorders. Frequent causes include a overuse / strain or a pinched nerve. It may be related to severe neck muscle spasm or injury to the area. If it tends to occur more in the mornings, then it could be related to your sleeping position and pillows. These are common causes but a doctor will need to examine you and possibly conduct further investigations.
